« on: 27 September, 2009, 09:00:39 pm »
Hi,has anyone had any experence with a winchester defender for 3 gun competition,I like the idea of a standard 7 shot mag,but am unsure of the 18 inch barrel and lack of changable chokes.

They are a good reliable shotgun but the lack of interchangeable chokes is a major problem sorry.
I've done this a thousand time before and no-one's been hurt........much

The Defender is one of the quickest pump shotguns out there and easy to load. No3 shot should knock down any steel targets you come across and the rifle sights makes you accurate ( I shouldn't have sold mine).
If you don't think pump guns are fast watch Pete shoot his 870(?)!
Winchester used to make  a 1300 model for IPSC, longer barrel fiber optic front sight, choke etc...how I would love one of those!

I like the Defender, great shotgun. But no good for 3 gun. Barrel length is not the problem, it is lack of choke. I found that steel targets, particularly small or heavy targets, just do not reliably go down with cylinder bore, even with 36 gram loads. Now I run a 22 inch Remington 1100. With improved cylinder, even 28 gram loads will reliably take down most steels.
Sure, use the Defender to start with, but expect to fire a lot of extra shots, and to suffer the bruised shoulder that goes with it.
Shoot faster have more fun
