Which Shot Gun for 3Gun??
« on: 28 September, 2009, 06:23:21 pm »
Hi,thanks for the comments on winchester defenders,it looks like the lack of changable chokes makes it unsuitable.
I'm still looking for ideas about shot guns, probably a pump action as the price and ease of maintance appeals.
I would consider a semi auto.
Any recommendations?

I shoot a remington1100&1187 and Benelli M4. Great shotguns, but more expensive than a defender. How about a winchester 1300 with inter chokes and add a mag extension?

The FN SLP is quite popular in the states at the moment. There are two models the SLP (18" barrel) and the SLP Mark 1 with a 22" barrel (this one is the more favoured of the two). They are basically the same as a Winchester SX2 and the Browning Gold. It doesn't have the Browning Autoload feature though. You can get the FN through Alex Melville (iGuns) in Dargaville. Mine cost $1950, you are welcome to have a go with it if you like.

A pump is least expensive - and you can fit mag extensions without needing an 'E' endorsement. However all pumps are not equal - and remember this ain't 'duck Shooting' ... which ever shotty you choose needs some sort of sighting system a bit better than just a front bead. For fixed sights the 'ghost Ring' is by far the best - but Electronic 'Dots' are probably faster.

The Gun City '870' pump with Ghost ring sights is probably the least expensive ($449 Retail) with excellent sights - but it has only an 18" barrell and 6-round capacity as bought. The next price step takes you to the Mossberg range - then on up into the higher priced US offerings. be aware that it takes LOTS of practice and knowledgable instruction to be able to use a pump very well.

For Semis you are restricted to 7-rounds in the mag tube unless it is 'E' category. Remington 1100 and 1187 have been extensively used and such things as mag tubes plus accessories are locally available. The Berretta 1200 has a very similar 'inertia' action to the more expensive Benellis - but it is a mission to fit a mag extension.

There are more expensive options - but start inexpensive and see what others are using - see if you can 'try before you buy' - remembering that you cannot 'borrow' or 'have a use of' an E cat firearm without a Permit to Procure!

The CPC "Club" shotgun is a GC 870 pump copy and for it's price has been working very well (We added a choke to it) Feel free to try before you buy  :bangbang:
I've done this a thousand time before and no-one's been hurt........much
